Excessive Force and Assault and Battery

This course focuses on what arguably is the largest liability concern of a law enforcement entity. This course is tailored to inform and educate departments and their employees on how to avoid liability when force becomes necessary during the course of a traffic stop, arrest, or other citizen contact. This court focuses on the use of force continuum and how courts perceive the use of pepper spray, batons, Tasers, and other forms of non-deadly force compliance aids used by law enforcement personnel. This course is of particular relevance at the present time given the recently enacted legislation permitting private Michigan residents to own and possess Tasers, as this development is sure to increase the potential of danger to law enforcement personnel in their day to day contact with the public.
